WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN SEEING A PSYCHOLOGIST?
Navigating the process of seeing a psychologist may seem unfamiliar and out of your comfort zone. We understand, and our goal is to provide you with the information you're looking for. Feel free to browse our FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) for more details.

What should I expect from my first session? After scheduling your first appointment, you will receive a friendly introduction email confirming the date and time of your appointment. This email will also provide important details about fees, rebates, and our location. If you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan, please remember to bring it with you to your first session. At the start of your initial appointment, your psychologist will briefly go over some necessary paperwork with you. This will involve filling out a form with basic personal information (such as your name, date of birth, address, and contact details) and signing a consent form that covers confidentiality, fees, and other important session-related information. If you have been referred to us by a GP or psychiatrist, we will also discuss the details of your Mental Health Treatment Plan during this time. Once the paperwork is taken care of, the rest of the session will be focused on discussing the issues that have led you to seek therapy. Your psychologist will take the time to deeply understand your concerns and explore relevant background information, such as your family, social relationships, work history, and if any previous counselling experiences. Using this valuable information, we will work together to gain insights into the root causes and ways to address your current challenges. If there is enough time, we will also collaborate with you to create a flexible plan for future therapy sessions. At The Growth Room, we're committed to supporting your growth and well-being during your sessions.

What’s the process of booking an appointment? At The Growth Room, we make it easy for you to book an appointment. You have three convenient options: phone, email, or our online booking. No matter how you choose to book, we genuinely care about your needs and will kindly ask you for some important information. This includes details about why you're coming in, your date of birth, and contact information. We'll also need to know if you have a Medicare referral and the details of your GP. Additionally, we want to accommodate your schedule if you have any specific preferences for when you'd like to be seen or at what time. Once you've booked, we'll send you a warm welcome email. This email will provide all the necessary details for your appointment, such as the date, time, and location. It will also contain helpful information, like how to find us and what to bring to your first appointment. To ensure you don't forget, we'll also send you an SMS reminder 48 hours before your first appointment.

Do I need a referral to see a psychologist? You don't need a referral to make an appointment. You can schedule sessions without a referral from your GP or a psychiatrist. Just keep in mind that without a referral, you will need to personally cover the entire cost of your sessions. If you want to explore whether you qualify for a referral under a Mental Health Treatment Plan, it's best to have a chat with your GP or psychiatrist before scheduling your first appointment.
